Meet Arthur Adams, your Red Sands Therapist.
With forty years of experience in education as a K-12 school counsellor Arthur brings a wealth of experience in assisting students with issues such as anxiety, self-regulation, peer relationships, negative self-esteem, divorce and separation, suicidal ideation, grief (associated with death, serious illness), and family dynamics. Arthur also has extensive experience in assisting verbal ASD children in building flexibility skills in dealing with change in the classroom and at home. Arthur also has extensively used Play Therapy in his practice with younger children. Play Therapy is an evidence based method in terms of assisting young children in identifying emotions, expressing thoughts, and to uncover hidden psychological issues.
Arthur is certified in the use of Dialectical Behavior Therapy , (DBT). In addition Arthur employs the framework of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, (CBT) as a means to assist clients in seeing life view points in a new and helpful way. The ability to Self Regulate is a critical skill and is the ability to control one's responses to intense feelings. Arthur has worked with many individuals using a multitude of strategies to address self regulatory skills. He also has extensive experience in the use of mindfulness as a means to address stressors at school and at home.
Arthur’s approach is client centered and collaborative. All clients possess the skills to solve life challenges once they discover their skill set within.
Arthur has an extensive educational background having worked thirteen years in school settings in Newfoundland and Labrador, and twenty-seven years in the Public School system on Prince Edward Island.
Arthur has a strong educational background with the belief in the importance of lifelong learning. His degrees include: Bachelor of Arts, BA, Bachelor of Education, B.Ed., Master of Adult Education and Community Development, M.Ed., and a Master of Counselling, M.Ed.
Arthur is a past President of the Prince Edward Island Counselling Association, PEICA, and a past PEI representative for the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada.
Arthur is a Canadian Certified Counsellor, CCC, and a member of the College of Counselling Therapy, CT of Prince Edward Island.
